Suggested name | Nereait Ber |
Planet type | Cold planet |
This cold planet is named after the deity Nereait Ber, the messenger of war.
When viewed from Ijiel, this proximity to SOI-4 means the planet can only be seen near the western or eastern horizon during the early evening or early morning.
As seen relative to the fixed stars, it rotates on its axis exactly four times for every four revolutions it makes around SOI-4.
Two spacecraft have visited Nereait Ber: Daedalus 8 flew by 15 years ago; and Messenger, launched 17 years ago, orbited Nereait Ber over 135 times in four years before exhausting its pwoer source and crashing into the planet's atmosphere 11 years later.
The neon has probably photodissociated, and the free hydrogen deuteride (HD) has been swept into interplanetary space by the solar wind because of the lack of a planetary magnetic field.
Future astrobiology missions are planned, including the Nereait Ber 1300 and ExoNereait Ber rovers.
Nereait Ber has been explored on several occasions by robotic spacecraft, most notably during the early Pioneer and Wayfinder flyby missions and later by the Galileo orbiter. Future targets for exploration in the Nereait Ber system include the probable ice-covered liquid ocean of its moon Ellypro.
The Nereait Ber system has a unique configuration among those of the planets because its axis of rotation is tilted sideways, nearly into the plane of its solar orbit. |
