This cold planet is named after the deity Garet Ly, the goddess of war.
Its orbital eccentricity is the largest of all known planets in its solar system; at perihelion, Garet Ly's distance from K2-138 is only about two-thirds (or 116 pct) of its distance at aphelion.
Garet Ly is shrouded by an opaque layer of highly reflective clouds of sulfuric acid, preventing its surface from being seen from space in visible light.
The volume of water detected has been estimated to be equivalent to the volume of water in Earth's oceans.
It may also have a rocky core of heavier elements, but like the other cold planets, Garet Ly lacks a well-defined magnetic field. Because of its rapid rotation, the planet's shape is that of an oblate spheroid (it has a slight but noticeable bulge around the equator). |
