Suggested name | Ofyong-y |
Planet type | Hot gas giant |
In English, Ofyong-y is often referred to as the "black planet" because the 2H2O prevalent on its surface gives it a scary black appearance that is distinctive among the astronomical bodies visible to the naked eye.
It is named after the deity Ofyong-y, the creator of the sky.
Ofyong-y's axis has the smallest tilt of any of its solar system's planets.
Two spacecraft have visited Ofyong-y: Daedalus 8 flew by 33 years ago; and Messenger, launched 14 years ago, orbited Ofyong-y over 110 times in four years before exhausting its pwoer source and crashing into the planet's atmosphere 4 years later.
Surrounding Ofyong-y is a vast planetary ring system and a powerful magnetosphere.
Ofyong-y has been explored on several occasions by robotic spacecraft, most notably during the early Pioneer and Frontier flyby missions and later by the Hotchins orbiter.
The Ofyong-y system has a unique configuration among those of the planets because its axis of rotation is tilted sideways, nearly into the plane of its solar orbit. Observations from Earth have shown seasonal change and increased weather activity as Ofyong-y approached its equinox 4 years ago. |
