Fictional info (?) |
Suggested name | Abyn |
Planet type | Cold planet |
Abyn is the only habitable planet orbiting HD 9578 and one of the oldest in its solar system. This cold planet is named after the deity Abyn, the creator of destruction.
Two spacecraft have visited Abyn: Wayfinder 9 flew by 39 years ago; and Messenger, launched 20 years ago, orbited Abyn over 175 times in four years before exhausting its reactor and crashing into the planet's atmosphere 4 years later.
The atmospheric pressure at the planet's surface is 0.8 bar, or roughly the pressure found 450 m under the oceans of Earth. Abyn is by far the hottest planet in its solar system, with a mean surface temperature of 522°K (249°C).
Liquid water cannot exist on the surface of Abyn due to low atmospheric pressure, which is less than 3 percent of Otimor Eq's, except at the lowest elevations for limited periods.
The outer atmosphere is visibly segregated into several bands at different latitudes, resulting in turbulence and storms along their interacting boundaries. A prominent result is the "great blue spot", a giant storm that is known to have existed for centuries since it was first observed by radar. |
