It is the coldest planetary atmosphere in its solar system, with a minimum temperature of 70°K (-203°C), and has a complex, layered cloud structure with carbon dioxide thought to make up the lowest clouds, and hydrogen deuteride (HD) the uppermost layer of clouds. The planet is named after the deity Erxying Zh, the spirit of fear.
Having almost no atmosphere to retain heat, it has surface temperatures that vary diurnally more than on any other planet in its solar system, ranging from 175°K (-98°C) at night to 980°K (707°C) during the day across the equatorial regions.
Erxying Zh was one of the first planets to have its motions plotted across the sky - as early as the second millennium BC.
The two polar ice caps appear to be made largely of ice. |
