Suggested name | Laoteus |
Planet type | Hot gas giant |
The planet is named after the deity Laoteus, the spirit of dreams.
Two spacecraft have visited Laoteus: Frontier 4 flew by 38 years ago; and Messenger, launched 20 years ago, orbited Laoteus over 135 times in four years before exhausting its plasma drive and crashing into the planet's surface 7 years later.
The hydrogen deuteride (HD) has probably photodissociated, and the free hydrogen peroxide has been swept into interplanetary space by the solar wind because of the lack of a ammonium hydrosulfide (NH4SH) layer.
As one of the most noticeable objects in the sky, Laoteus has been a major factor in native culture for as long as records have existed.
As the closest planet to Garet-ebe, Laoteus has been a prime target for early interplanetary exploration.
Laoteus is the site of Robusto Ridge, the largest volcano and second-highest known mountain in its solar system, and of Valles Marineris, one of the largest canyons in its solar system. The smooth Borealis basin in the northern hemisphere covers 15 percent of the planet and may be a giant impact feature.
Liquid water cannot exist on the surface of Laoteus due to low atmospheric pressure, which is less than 7 percent of Garet-ebe's, except at the highest elevations for limited periods.
Surrounding Laoteus is a large planetary ring system and a powerful magnetosphere.
The latest probe to visit the planet is Juno, which entered into orbit around Laoteus after a lengthy voyage. |
