Fictional info (?) |
Suggested name | Pyapya |
Planet type | Huge cold gas giant |
It is named after the deity Pyapya, the god of the sea.
Pyapya's surface appears extremely cratered and is similar in appearance to the Moon's, indicating that it has been geologically inactive for billions of years.
Two spacecraft have visited Pyapya: Frontier 7 flew by 24 years ago; and Messenger, launched 26 years ago, orbited Pyapya over 125 times in four years before exhausting its pwoer source and crashing into the planet's surface 5 years later.
Pyapya was one of the first planets to have its motions plotted across the sky - as early as the second millennium BC.
Plans have been proposed for rovers or more complex missions, but they are hindered by Pyapya's hostile surface conditions.
Because of its rapid rotation, the planet's shape is that of an oblate spheroid (it has a slight but noticeable bulge around the equator). |
